Apple Vision Pro: A camera on your face
Part II in a series exploring strategic implications of the Apple Vision Pro.
Apple’s Vision Pro headset, or “Spatial Computing” device, is many things. One of them is a highly sophisticated video camera that consumers have never before encountered.
Apple is suggesting the headset not just for consumption but for capture. “Vision Pro is Apple’s first 3D camera. You can capture magical spatial photos and spatial videos in 3D.” It’s loaded with cameras and lidar that are necessary for their augmented reality and for gestural control inside a VR experience, but that can also be used for high definition immersive capture.
The capture and playback use case was demonstrated at launch. Apple depicted an adult at a watching children play, looking like Dad is wearing ski goggles in the living room. (At least I hope that’s Dad, or he’s not getting invited back.)
Will Apple step into this opportunity, and use their brand’s power, their designer’s touch for ease of use, and their marketing to demonstrate new value propositions and behaviors?
Will the immersive capture and sharing of actual reality (or cinematic) become a new paradigm, for professional content (eg Hollywood) and/or consumers?
